Carol Supplee, Imagine Artwear,President

 

Carol Supplee has owned and operated Imagine Artwear in Alexandria since 1992.  Prior to that, she spent fifteen years working as a bank marketing specialist.  She feels fortunate to have worked for some of the best ad agencies around. 

Imagine Artwear specializes in presenting a collection of American made handcrafts, including clothing, jewelry, accessories and home furnishings. 

Carol has a Master of Arts Degree in Museology and Art History from George Washington University.  Early experience included working in a small Georgetown print gallery, as editor of “Galleries Guide”, and on The American Freedom Train Foundation, a bicentennial exhibit that toured the US.

Being a small business owner in Alexandria, Carol feels strongly about the responsibilities that come with that job.  Those include representing her suppliers in the best possible way, offering the highest quality product to her customers and, finally, helping her fellow businesses by adding as much as possible to the vitality and viability of the city.

Rose Gentile, CLTC is an agent of New York Life for over 23 years and a financial adviser with Eagle Stratgeies. Roger Parks, American Advertising, Co-Treasurer

 

American Advertising Distributors of Northern Virginia was founded by Roger Parks in 1981 and soon will be celebrating 30 years as a full-service direct mail marketing agency to the Metropolitan Washington, D.C. area, providing graphic design, list brokering, printing and mail shop services.  Roger served on the Board of Directors of the original OTBA for over 20 years as well as the King Street Metro Enterprise Team (KSMET), serving as chairman for two years, and has served on the Board of Directors of the OTBPA since its inception. Having lived in Old Town for over 35 years, Roger is highly involved in other business and local community groups including the Chamber of Commerce, having served on the Board of Directors as Vice Chairman of Membership Division, Vice Chairman of Communications Division, and for 10 years, Chairman of the Golf Committee; Chairman, the City of Alexandria Marketing Fund (founding member); Alexandria Board of Advisors for the Virginia Commerce Bank; Board of Directors of the Alexandria Symphony; Board of Directors of the Alexandria Heart Association; and numerous committees of the above. Roger is proud to serve OTBPA by coordinating and producing the highly successful fall retail and winter restaurant marketing campaign booklets.

 

 

 

 

Jay Palermino, Alexandria Chamber of Commerce,  Secretary

 

JAY PALERMINO serves Alexandria Chamber of Commerce in development for membership & sponsorship investments. Historically, Jay lead annual campaigns within key industry sectors for new membership gain as a board member and top-producing resource philanthropist.

Prior to joining the Alexandria Chamber of Commerce staff, Mr. Palermino founded Best Solutions Consulting, LLC (BSC), an Alexandria, VA-based, boutique public relations/marketing communications firm.  Jay has counseled entrepreneurs in increasing their brand identity and market share.

Outcome-oriented and geared towards the most savvy of marketing initiatives, Jay serves as an accomplished devotee to small business development, contributing marketing enhancement in three area concerns:  Patricia Palermino Studio, Hollin Hall Pastry Company & Shop and Willow Restaurant, which he is vested.

During non-work hours, Jay enjoys the outdoors and activities involving his appreciation for boating and horticulture.

Janet Barnett, Senior Services

Janet Barnett currently serves as the Executive Director of Senior Services of Alexandria (a non-profit organization serving the needs of older Alexandrians).  She joined the nonprofit in November, 2007.  Prior to that Janet was with the Alexandria Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities, an agency of the City government.  She spent 32 years there and served in a number of capacities including the first director of the Chinquapin Park Recreation Center and Division Chief of the Enterprise and Marketing Division  Prior to her retirement, she served  as Deputy Director of the Department  from 1996-2007.

 

Janet is not a stranger to the Old Town Business Association.  In her capacity with the City, she worked on numerous projects with OTBA including tree lights, the Jamestown Celebration, Supper Under the Stars and many special events.

David Martin, Goldworks USA

 

David Martin grew up in Delaware and went to college at University of Rochester and earned his Associates Degree in Art from Miami Dade Jr College before joining the Air Force.  He first came to Alexandria in 1968 when he was stationed at Andrews Air Force Base serving as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist.  After many exciting adventures that included building a sail boat and then sailing it in the Florida Keys he returned to Alexandria in 1980.  Now, an artist, with training in copper and bronze sculpture, he continued his art studies at the Corcoran Art School, the Alexandria Art League and Montgomery College Art department  where he assisted renowned Korean jewelry designer, Komilia Okim.  She taught design and metal casting as well as forming in silver and gold. He became a member of the Washington Guild of Goldsmiths and then apprenticed with the foreman of Dickomey’s, the premier repair center of the entire Washington, D.C. Area.  There he gained experience handling the micro work he does to repair fine gold and platinum chain.  More study included the Gemological Institute of America and other fine jewelry courses.  During this time he also did repairs and custom designs for several jewelry stores in and around Northern Virginia.  In November 1989 he opened Gold Works at 1400 King Street in Old Town, Alexandria. He continues to learn and expand his expertise and has become proficient in Computer Assisted Design.  He runs continual computer slide shows in the windows of his store of his most current work.

David has been quite active in the City of Alexandria.  In 2003 he became a staff member in the Mankind Project of the Washington Metropolitan Area that provides support to men and teaches young men to grow into mature men. He was a graduate of Leadership Alexandria in 2005 and became President of The Old Town Business and Professional Association (OTBPA) in 2008. Also in 2008, he designed the Mayor’s city seal pendant to act as the Golden Fleece to wear at international meetings. The mayor called it his “bling.”  Mr. Martin roused the City into installing the Old Town Banners just in time for the opening of National Harbor and has been very active in other Alexandria Chamber of Commerce functions such as the Government Relations Committee.  Most recently David was nominated by the Chamber of Commerce for a Business Award in 2010 and he is also an elected member of the Alexandria City Commission for the Arts.  He chairs the Alexandria city gallery art management committee.   In September, he chaired OTBPA’s  very successful  “ Jazz Supper Under the Stars, “  and one of his sculptures  has  been on exhibit  in the  Alexandria City Hall from  June  thru  September 2010.

You can find David at his shop at the corner of 1400 King and West Streets. He is Alexandria’s jeweler and designer, an active community member and humorist.  He especially enjoys making wedding bands and engagement rings and fancies himself a couple’s counselor.

 

 

 

Fred Parker, Hard Times

 

Fred Parker spent the 1950s growing up in Northern Virginia. Studied graphic design at the University of Arizona. 1964 returned to Washington DC where he worked as a designer and art director for various associations. Mid 1970s worked for Design & Production Inc. as graphic consultant for traveling trade shows. In 1978 was hired by the National Gallery of Art for the exhibition design staff and created silk screen department for new east wing. Founded the Hard Times Café in 1980. Left the Feds in 1982. Licensed a company to franchise the Hard Times concept in 1990. Currently he is a semi-retired chili mogul.

Personal: Wife Carol works as a painting conservator at the National Gallery of Art.

     Son Jonathan graduated Oberlin Music Conservatory, resides in Shanghai where he makes a living as a jazz musician.

     Son Ned is a senior at Lynchburg College majoring in Psychics.

 

Tara Zimnick-Calico, Torpedo Factory Art Center

 

Tara Zimnick-Calico is the Director of Special Events for the Torpedo Factory Art Center in Alexandria, Virginia.  Tara came to this position after 6 years as a US Government defense contractor; a portion of which was focused on classroom and conference planning. As the Director of Special Events at the Torpedo Factory Art Center, Tara is responsible for the after-hours event rental program and the majority of in-house events.  In early 2006, Tara included in her role Community Liaison.  In this role she was active on the Old Town Civic Association Waterfront Committee, a Board Member on the Old Town Business and Professional Association, and headed up Old Town’s Second Thursday Art Night.  Born, raised, and currently living in the Alexandria area, Tara is invested both personally and professionally in the success of the Torpedo Factory Art Center.
